There is a fantastic interview with artist, Paul Behnke, on Gorky's Granddaughter blog.
It becomes very clear that Behnke absolutely LOVES painting, and he has a great sense of humor.

James Bishop

Images from a recent exhibition of work by James Bishop at David Zwirner spanning over fifty years.
I really enjoy the simplicity and depth of Bishop's paintings.

“I find that drawing is a way for me to find out about things I wanted to pursue in a different medium, whether it be painting on a larger scale or sculpture. There’s an excitement about working things out on paper, and it would sometimes surprise me. The surprise always hooks you, because you’re always hoping it will come around again.” - Tony DeLap.

Ruth Pastine - Mind's Eye, Sense Certainty Series

Brian Gross Fine Art is exhibiting a new series from Ruth Pastine.
There are six canvases in the show; three blue and three red.
Her canvases have a very deep bevel and project from the wall
four or five inches. This causes the color planes to appear to float off of the wall.

The blue series has subtle vertical gradients with a range of blue intensities.
All of the paintings optically vibrate - especially the largest in
the series, Blue Orange (Violet Blue Deep), 60" x 60".

The red series is quite intense and almost electric under the
gallery lights. Subtle gradients of color are again at play with the bands
of violet fading off into infinity.

Leon Polk Smith

Leon Polk Smith was born in Oklahoma before it became a state.
His parents were early settlers in "Indian Territory".

Somewhere along the way he picked up a paint brush,
and discovered Mondrian.

For more information, interviews and fabulous images of his work

INTERVIEW by Addison Parks, 1982

Much of his work looks startlingly similar to Ellsworth Kelly's.
Seems strange to me that he isn't more famous.
