Charles Pollock: A Retrospective

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection (Venice) is presenting a retrospective of Charles Pollock's work which includes abstract paintings that rival, or to my mind surpass, his more famous brother Jackson's work. http://www.guggenheim-venice.it/

The exhibition runs from April 23rd through September 14th.

Robert Swain: Color Energy at Minus Space

I first encountered Robert Swain's work at the David Richard Gallery in Santa Fe. He has made a group of paintings specifically for the inaugural opening of the new Minus Space Gallery location in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Note: This exhibition closes July 4th !

Minus Space: "From his exhibition, Color Energy, Swain presents an immersive set of three 9'x9' paintings, in which squares of pure color are arranged into grids that are subtly modulated by hue, value, and saturation. The paintings are Swain's latest investigation into the color system he's developed over the past five decades. The centerpiece of this system is a 30-part color circle. These colors, when combined with the attributed of value (the lightness or darkness of a color) and saturation (the pureness of a color), produce a compliment of 4,896 distinct hues."

James Kalm interview with Matthew Deleget of Minus Space on Robert Swain's new paintings and the gallery's new location: http://www.minusspace.com/2015/06/robert-swain-james-kalm/

Foundations of Color

Foundations of Color by Jeff Davis. This is a very clear presentation on color theory. An excellent supplement to Albers and Itten's books on color. Davis uses contemporary art as examples from artists such as Robert Swain and Gabrielle Evertz.

Nancy Haynes at George Lawson

Four paintings by Nancy Haynes. The paintings slowly reveal quite vibrant layers of color.

The central body of the paintings are smoothly feathered out to the sides. The top and bottom edges on the front of the canvases reveal layers of paint with both subtle and abrupt shifts in value. This peeling back from the edges is not dissimilar to the way Brice Marden treated the edges of his oil and wax canvases in the mid-1960's.
