SCRIBBLE BOOK:
“Why not allow the form and color to affect your sensibility without demanding anymore from it ? For that is all there is. And in effect, that is all to begin with.” – Amédée Ozenfant.

Svenja Deininger at Marianne Boesky in Chelsea
I was just in New York and saw some incredibly inspiring paintings by Svenja Deininger.
Svenja's paintings are absolutely amazing.

Svenja's paintings are absolutely amazing.
Composition, shape, surface.
Nothing more.
What else does one really need ?

Svenja's use of color and shape remind me of Ozenfant.
Svenja creates a wonderful tension between shape and surface in these paintings.

There's a range of surface distinctions from matte to gloss, smooth to rough.
Some of the edges of the paintings reveal multiple built-up layers that provide a peek into the making of the object.

I think Svenja juxtaposes the surface in some ways similar to Suzan Frecon.

William Rubin on Ellsworth Kelly
From Art News, Converting Painting Into Sculpture: Ellsworth Kelly's Signature Style, in 1963.
Coinciding with a current show at Matthew Marks New York Gallery, Art News recently revisited this article written on Kelly's work in 1963. If you can get past the first few paragraphs, this is well worth the read.
