Ruth Pastine - Mind's Eye, Sense Certainty Series

Brian Gross Fine Art is exhibiting a new series from Ruth Pastine.
There are six canvases in the show; three blue and three red.
Her canvases have a very deep bevel and project from the wall
four or five inches. This causes the color planes to appear to float off of the wall.

The blue series has subtle vertical gradients with a range of blue intensities.
All of the paintings optically vibrate - especially the largest in
the series, Blue Orange (Violet Blue Deep), 60" x 60".

The red series is quite intense and almost electric under the
gallery lights. Subtle gradients of color are again at play with the bands
of violet fading off into infinity.

Leon Polk Smith

Leon Polk Smith was born in Oklahoma before it became a state.
His parents were early settlers in "Indian Territory".

Somewhere along the way he picked up a paint brush,
and discovered Mondrian.

Much of his work looks startlingly similar to Ellsworth Kelly's.
Seems strange to me that he isn't more famous.

Stations of the Cross

Barnett Newman's Stations of the Cross on display at the DeYoung Museum.
A series of 15 paintings produced from 1958 - 1966,
and displayed in a room dedicated solely to this series.

The exhibit space feels almost like a chapel, and visitors spoke only in whispers
on both of my visits.

Miles Davis - Spanish Key, Live at the Isle of Wight 1970

The music of Miles Davis has always made me think of colors. Almost as though he was creating paintings. From strong bursts of color contrasts and compliments to soft hues of grey with subtle undertones.

Gabriele Evertz

Gabriele Evertz's paintings focus on the pure impact of color by eliminating complex compositions or figure-ground relationships. This allows the viewer to experience solely the sensations of color and its impact on our emotions and feelings.
